Guidelines for team selection:
All athletes must be born in the years 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006.
To be eligible, athletes must be members in good standing of the Ontario Amateur Wrestling Association.
The Canada Games team for Ontario will be selected at two separate tournaments on March 27th and April 10th, with a possible wrestle-off April 23 if needed (see below)
Please note: an athlete does not have to compete in both tournaments or be at the same weight class for both tournaments.

The Champion will represent Team Ontario at the Canada Summer Games if they commit to the Canada Summer Games Program.
If the athlete cannot commit to the CSG Program, or if based upon the unanimous decision of the appropriate Games Team Coaches (Head Men’s or Women’s and Assistant Men’s or Women’s as applicable) and the OAWA Vice-President, Technical, the Trials Champion does not maintain his/her training and preparedness for the Games, the Trials Champion may be removed from the Team and the Alternate put in his/her place. If the Alternate cannot commit, or is by the unanimous decision of the appropriate Games Team Coaches ((Head Men’s or Women’s and Assistant Men’s or Women’s as applicable) and the OAWA Vice-President, Technical, is felt to not be prepared for the Games, the Coaching Staff have the option to select a team member, who is best felt, will represent Ontario at the Games, whether or not they competed at the Trials. This decision must also be by the unanimous decision of the appropriate Games Team Coaches (Head Men’s or Women’s and Assistant Men’s or Women’s as applicable) and the OAWA Vice-President, Technical.
Alternates will be selected from medallists at qualifying tournaments and 2nd finisher at wrestle-off.
Athletes must continue to participate as required in the Canada Games Team Development Program, including being available for any wrestle-offs (see below) if required.
In the unusual circumstance of an athlete winning a qualifier in more than one weight class, they can wrestle off in both weight classes but if they win both wrestle-offs, they must declare which weight they wish to join the team at immediately following the last wrestle off.
Provisions for Special Circumstances:
If an athlete participates in either of the March 27 or April 10 Qualifying events, they can not petition for an injury Appeal/wrestle-off under # 2 below.
A 2020 Juvenile Provincial medallist or Cadet champion who is injured and is unable to take part in the Canada Games Team Trials events may file a Notice of Appeal with the OAWA no later than by the closing time of the April 9th weigh-in. The athlete must present him/herself at the weigh-ins of the Trials, but is not expected to weigh-in. Exceptions may be considered by the V.P. Technical of the OAWA where attending the weigh-in would present an undue hardship (extreme travel distance, medical reasons, etc.). A medical note from a Doctor, outlining why they were unable to compete must be submitted. OAWA reserves the right to have the athlete examined by a doctor of the Association’s choosing to confirm the legitimacy of the injury. The Notice of Appeal must clearly identify the weight class that the wrestler wishes to enter. No change of weight class is permitted after the Notice of Appeal has been submitted.
To be eligible to receive a medical wrestle-off, the athlete must be ready to compete by the date set for a wrestle-off before the May 7 deadline noted below. If the athlete is not able to do so, they forfeit their opportunity to wrestle-off.
Final medical wrestle off will be May 7 at a location to be determined. If a wrestler who won one of the first two tournaments is the opponent for this wrestle-off and must travel more than 800 km for the wrestle-off their travel will be covered by OAWA.
The decision as to the date, time, and location for the wrestle-off as reached by the Games Team Coaches (men’s or women’s as applicable) and OAWA Vice-President Technical is final. If the petitioner is unable to attend, he/she forfeits their opportunity to wrestle-off.
For the medical wrestle-off, the petitioner must make scratch Canada Games weight. The Trials winner (or winner of both Qualifying events if applicable) will have a 1 kg. Weight allowance.
For the medical wrestle-off, the petitioner will be down 1 match in the best 2 of 3.
The fee for the medical wrestle off will be equal to both entry fees for the qualifying tournaments.
A wrestler named to the Canada Summer Games Team may be replaced at any time prior to the Canada Summer Games. This clause may be exercised if in the judgment of appropriate Games Team Coaches (Head Men’s or Women’s and Assistant Men’s or Women’s as applicable) and the OAWA Vice-President, Technical by unanimous agreement, the athlete has not met the requirements of the CSG Program, and/or has not displayed a commitment to training outside the required training camps and/or has been disruptive to the team.
Decisions made under this Selection Criteria may be appealed under the Procedure for Appeals as listed in the OAWA Code of Conduct. Copies of this Code are available from the OAWA, or on the Association website.
